Filter may offer particulate filtration only or can be configured as a combination filter and silencer. The combination of both filtration and silencing is referred to as a filter silencer.

The filter elements are typically available in paper, polyester or wire. Paper offers the greatest filtration with efficiencies as high as 99.5% at 2 microns. Polyester elements are typically rated at 99% for 10 microns. Wire mesh elements are typically rated at 93% on 10 microns with oil or adhesive treatment.
