Many positive displacement blowers and vacuum pumps can be configured in different orientations to work with the flow of air or gas in your system. Both the Roots Universal RAI series and Roots RAM series have this capability. For other blower series please refer to the specific information about the models to learn which configuration options are available.
Basic URAI and RAM Configurations
The horizontal configuration can be described as vertical airflow or you can draw a line between the shaft ends. If the line is horizontal it is a horizontal unit. If the line is vertical, it is a vertical unit. The best orientation for a rotary positive displacement blower is in a horizontal configuration; click to read more about why horizontal is preferable.
The position of the drive shaft is determined by the location of your driver; the shaft should be positioned closest to the driver. In a vertical configuration, the inlet should be between the blower and driver if possible.
When new units are shipped from the manufacturer, the default configuration is a horizontal orientation with the drive shaft on the left hand side (when looking at the drive shaft end of the blower). This configuration can be changed to either a horizontal or vertical orientation with the drive shaft on either end of the blower. When purchasing a new unit, you’ll need to specify which configuration you want. pdblowers will reconfigure your unit at no charge to you, however it may impact lead time as our team will need to change the default configuration and repackage the unit for shipping.
Other Blower Configurations
On some blower models, the direction of flow must be included in the configuration. For example, any Roots blower with the Whispairâ„¢ jetport feature must specify direction of flow, since the jetport must be located on the discharge outlet. The default configuration for a Whispairâ„¢ unit is the Left Bottom.
